eu-LISA Industry Roundtable 2026: Data Management

Overview

Over two days, representatives from industry, Member State authorities, academia and EU institutions came together to exchange perspectives on Data Management and the technologies and architectures needed to build secure, scalable and resilient public-sector digital infrastructure across Europe.

Organised by eu-LISA in cooperation with the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU, this edition focuses on Data Management.

As European institutions increasingly depend on complex, interconnected digital systems, protecting sensitive data throughout its lifecycle while maintaining security and interoperability is becoming increasingly critical. Our CEO and Co-Founder, Dr. Ingrid Romijn, contributed to Session 3, “Secure and scalable data architectures for the public sector”, sharing Q*Bird’s perspective on strengthening the protection of sensitive and mission-critical data as European digital systems become increasingly interconnected.

From digital sovereignty and interoperability to resilience and secure data architectures, the discussions reinforced an important challenge, as Europe continues to modernise the large-scale IT systems supporting justice, migration, asylum and border management, the infrastructure carrying sensitive information must be prepared not only for the threats of today, but also those of tomorrow. This is where quantum secure communication becomes increasingly relevant.

The Falqon® MDI-QKD Series enables scalable, interoperable and operational quantum secure communication networks, adding a physics-based security layer for protecting critical communications across complex infrastructure environments.

A sincere thank you to eu-LISA, the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU, and everyone involved in bringing together such a diverse community of public-sector and technology experts. It was a privilege to contribute to the dialogue and exchange perspectives on how Europe can continue building trusted, resilient and future-ready digital infrastructure.

What is a Quantum Secure Network (QSN)?

A Quantum Secure Network (QSN) is an operational communication infrastructure that combines quantum key generation, secure key lifecycle management, network orchestration and interoperability within a unified product solution. Rather than protecting individual communication links, Quantum Secure Networks (QSN) embed security directly into the network architecture, enabling trusted connectivity across distributed environments.

Are you moving away from QKD?

No. Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD) remains the technological foundation of Quantum Secure Networks (QSN) and continues to be a core technology within the Falqon® Systems product portfolio.

Operational Quantum Secure Networks (QSN) require considerably more than quantum key generation alone. They require integrated infrastructure capable of securely managing cryptographic keys, orchestrating network operations, supporting architectures and enabling interoperability across distributed infrastructures. Falqon® Systems introduces and develops this broader infrastructure while continuing to advance scalable MDI-QKD.

Is Falqon® Systems B.V. a new company?

No. Q*Bird B.V. is changing its registered company name to Falqon® Systems B.V. This does not create a new legal entity. The same Dutch legal entity continues to exist under its new registered name. The company’s Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number, VAT registration and other corporate identifiers remain unchanged.

What is changing?

Q*Bird becomes Falqon® Systems. The Falqon® portfolio becomes the unified product solution. Future technologies will be developed under the Falqon® Systems portfolio as part of a unified product solution that enables Quantum Secure Networks (QSN).

What is MDI-QKD and why does it matter for Quantum Secure Networks?

Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD) is the technological foundation of Falqon® Quantum Secure Networks (QSN). It removes detector-side vulnerabilities from the QKD security model and enables secure key distribution across scalable multi-user network architectures. This makes it well suited for building resilient, operational quantum secure communication infrastructure.

Where can I find documentation or setup guides?

Documentation and setup guides are available for Falqon® Systems products. If you are unsure which materials you need, contact our support team and we will guide you to the right resources.

Why is Q*Bird becoming Falqon® Systems?

The transition to Falqon® Systems reflects the evolution of both the company and the market. Q*Bird established itself as a pioneer in scalable Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD), demonstrating that quantum secure communications can move beyond laboratory environments towards operational deployment.
